And so, this term is the final act for the Senior Class of 2024. A collegial and caring cohort of young people who have pursued excellence in all aspects of their lives at TLC, including Academics, Sport, Athletics, Swimming, Performing Arts, Mooting and Breakfast Club to name a few. We thank them for wearing our TLC colours well in their pursuits.

To the parents and carers of the Senior Class of 2024 I want to thank you. Thank you for trusting your young people to our care. Thank you for being their taxis, as you supported your young adult in all their endeavours. Thank you for riding the roller-coaster of Senior Secondary, for each moment you supported them through their frustrations, tears and disappointments. Thank you for the times you realised the state of their room didn’t matter as much as their wellbeing. For the times you entered the room and said it’s time to sleep, please, please turn out the light! Thank you for being there and celebrating in their successes as they have grown as human beings ready for the futures ahead of them.

Congratulations to those young people who have already secured apprenticeships and early entrance to University, these are extraordinary milestones.

Parents and carers, please remind your young people as they prepare for the last of the lasts, to simply strive for their Personal Best. Help them remember to balance their studies with exercise, to hydrate, to eat healthily and to get enough sleep. Encourage them to enjoy each moment of the next few weeks as they experience the final elements of their College journey.

The 2024 Ski Trip to Queenstown, New Zealand, was an unforgettable adventure for 30 of our students from Years 10, 11, and 12, accompanied by 5 dedicated staff members during the first week of the September holidays. This exciting opportunity allowed our students to challenge themselves by learning new skills in a fresh environment, far from home. Every student returned with positive stories and a newfound love for the mountains.

Coronet Peak and the Remarkables in Queenstown are premier alpine destinations, offering a wonderland of snow sports with facilities catering to both beginners and seasoned skiers and snowboarders. Students and staff found slopes that matched their experience levels and participated in ski or snowboard lessons throughout our stay. They also partook in a very competitive snowman building competition with the winners receiving plush Kiwi birds.

The group stayed at the Lake View Holiday Park in Queenstown. Besides enjoying five full days of skiing, they also engaged in various activities around Queenstown. Highlights included the thrilling Shotover Jet ride, the immersive 12D Vortex Movie Experience, a scenic Skyline Gondola ride and dinner, visits to the Arcade, and a fun-filled night of Kingpin Ten Pin Bowling while watching the footy.

The 2024 Ski Trip was a resounding success, with both students and staff thoroughly enjoying their time away.

Secondary Debating

This year, The Lakes College was excited to enter six teams into the Queensland Debating Union (QDU) competition: two Year 7, two Year 8, and two Year 9. These teams engaged in spirited debates against other Brisbane North Secondary schools, showcasing their analytical and persuasive skills, research prowess, and teamwork. Needless to say, the 2024 debating season was marked by fierce battles of wit and eloquence.

We even had two of the four eligible teams – 8.2 and 9.1 – make it to the finals rounds where they competed against teams from all over Brisbane. The formidable 9.1 made TLC history by making it to Round 3 of Finals and were in the top 16 Year 9 teams in all of Brisbane – a fantastic feat!

When asked to reflect on the season, these were the favourite topics for our debaters:

• That unemployed youth should be forced to join the military.
• That we should privatise the ABC.
• That we should legalise vigilantism in high crime areas.
• That we should ban the Commonwealth Games.

As both the Debating Coordinator and one of the Coaches, I am proud of the incredible journey each team embarked on during this season. All TLC teams impressed the adjudicators, audience, and their coaches with their well-reasoned arguments, thorough preparation, and passionate delivery.

A huge round of applause must also go to the unsung heroes – the Coaches! They’ve been the guiding stars, shaping young minds, nurturing talent, and supporting the growth of all debaters. Thank you, Miss Emily Malone and Miss Clara Aleckson.

We look forward to carrying this momentum forward into the 2025 debating season.
